Illicit trafficking and the misuse of firearms in Europe

M16 rifle
The M16 rifle, used in many militaries worldwide, is banned for civilian use in the EU.

No European Union country remains unaffected by firearms violence. Firearms cause widespread death and bodily harm in the EU; the use of these weapons also spreads fear, and undermines citizens’ sense of security. Over the past few years, tragic gun attacks have repeatedly drawn media attention. Firearm violence is a cross-border phenomenon and a common challenge for all.
