On 22–23 May, SIPRI and the Asser Institute hosted a short training course on international law and the governance of military technologies driven by artificial intelligence (AI). The course was held at the Asser Institute in the Hague.

As military applications of AI revolutionize military operations and regulatory discussions gain momentum in the United Nations and other global forums, this two-day training programme aimed to address knowledge gaps and contribute to the advancement of policy processes.

Speakers consisted of a diverse group of experts from academia, research institutes and governments specialising in international law, ethics and the governance of military AI. The short course was led by Dr Marta Bo, Senior Researcher at the Asser Institute and Associate Senior Researcher at SIPRI; and featured SIPRI researchers Laura Bruun and Alexander Blanchard.

The short course was open to policymakers, legal advisors, diplomats and other individuals interested in the development, use, governance and adjudication of AI-enabled military technologies.
