On 27 January researchers from the SIPRI Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Programme briefed a delegation of policymakers and experts on multidomain nuclear escalation risk.

Contemporary warfare is characterized by military operations that encompass multiple arenas and feature the convergence of advanced technological capabilities. New vectors of vulnerability stemming from this convergence raise the spectre of escalation and introduce new potential pathways for nuclear weapon use. SIPRI staff explored global governance approaches to these issues, drawing on findings from dialogues convened as part of research supported by the Global Challenges Foundation and other SIPRI work on the AI–space and space–nuclear nexuses. The discussion focused on identifying means of effectively reducing risk.

Anna Möller-Loswick, Head of Common Security at the Global Challenges Foundation, provided introductory remarks. From SIPRI’s WMD Programme, Dr Wilfred Wan, Programme Director, Nivedita Raju, Senior Researcher, and Vladislav Chernavskikh, Researcher, delivered the briefing, which was attended by a cross section of officials and experts based in Stockholm.
