On 29 April, SIPRI experts participated in the third meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in New York.
Dr Mark Bromley of SIPRI’s Dual-Use and Arms Trade Programme chaired a side event titled ‘Non-proliferation, Peaceful Uses and Nuclear Technology: Clarifying the Role and Impact of Export Controls’, co-hosted by SIPRI and the European Union and funded by the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium (EUNPDC). The side event brought together experts from South Africa, the Philippines and the EU and focused on the role of the Nuclear Suppliers Group and export controls in preventing nuclear non-proliferation and enabling transfers of nuclear technology for peaceful uses. These issues are also examined in a new report published by SIPRI and EUNDPC in April.
Dr Tytti Erästö of SIPRI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Programme spoke at a side event organized by the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace and the Hiroshima Prefectural Government on the theme ‘Envisioning Global Security Without Reliance on Nuclear Deterrence’. Dr Erästö also presented her recently published SIPRI Insights Paper ‘Clearing the Path for Nuclear Disarmament: Confidence-building in the Korean Peninsula’, which explored possibilities for building confidence in the Korean Peninsula to address the conflict dynamics and militarization in the region.
