SIPRI at MSC 2018
The global arms industry: US companies dominate the Top 100; Russian arms industry moves to second place
SIPRI released new data on the world’s largest arms-producing and military services companies—the SIPRI Top 100. The report found that the total arms sales of the SIPRI Top 100 in 2017 were 2.5 per cent higher than in 2016, representing an increase of 44 per cent since 2002. Translations of the press release are available in Catalan, French, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

The landscape of arms control: Perspectives from Russia—new film series from SIPRI
SIPRI is pleased to present a new series of films that provide Russian perspectives on the landscape of arms control. The interviewees give their assessments of the current obstacles facing the arms control agenda and ways to overcome them. The interviews were recorded in Moscow in October 2018 during a conference co-hosted by SIPRI and IMEMO. The conference celebrated 25 years of translation of the SIPRI Yearbook into Russian.

SIPRI launches new report on nuclear security at two events in Washington
On the occasion of the launch of a new SIPRI report, Nuclear Security in the Black Sea Region: Contested Spaces, National Capacities and Multinational Potential, SIPRI co-hosted two events in Washington, DC. The meetings included a closed briefing for United States Senate working staff and was held in cooperation with the Fissile Material Working Group.

Ambassador Jan Eliasson, Chair of the SIPRI Governing Board, participated in an international conference to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the St Petersburg Declaration. Eliasson delivered a key-note speech at a panel discussion where he addressed the current trends of humanitarian action and the role that SIPRI plays to make the world a safer place.

Panel debate on the relationship between hunger and conflict
SIPRI, in cooperation with the United Nations (UN) World Food Programme, the UN Association of Sweden and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, hosted a panel debate on the theme ‘Faces of hunger and conflict’, followed by a photo exhibition. The panel debate focused on UN Security Council Resolution 2417, which acknowledges the link between hunger and conflict.

SIPRI co-organizes strategic roundtable with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr Denis Mukwege
SIPRI, together with the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Karolinska Institute, organized a strategic roundtable in honour of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr Denis Mukwege. The discussion focused on identifying and assessing what the international community can do to effectively respond to sexual violence in conflict.

5–7 December 2018
SIPRI co-hosts workshop on nuclear spent fuel strategies and shared security concerns
SIPRI, together with the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation, hosted the second in a series of workshops on trilateral dialogue between Japan, South Korea and the USA on nuclear spent fuel strategies and shared security concerns. The workshop covered the connections between nuclear energy policy decisions and the three countries’ shared regional security concerns, including the challenge of nuclear spent fuel management in North Korea.

The SIPRI Top 100 arms-producing and military services companies, 2017
Arms sales of the world’s 100 largest arms-producing and military services companies (the SIPRI Top 100) totalled $398.2 billion in 2017. This was an increase of 2.5 per cent compared with 2016 and marks the third consecutive year of growth in Top 100 arms sales. This Fact Sheet lists the SIPRI Top 100 for 2017 from the updated SIPRI Arms Industry Database and describes trends in international arms sales that are revealed by the new data.
