An internship at SIPRI provides an opportunity to learn about the institute’s work.
Interns from around the world are given the chance to assist in SIPRI’s research, under supervision, within its various research programmes. They also have the opportunity to conduct some of their own research while at the institute.
In a more limited number, SIPRI also offers internship positions within its support functions: communications and outreach and assistance to the Director.
Before an intern starts his/her internship, the Programme/Department Director and the intern sign an agreement on the content of the internship.
SIPRI does not have a formal programme for interns or special funding for this purpose. As such, SIPRI cannot pay for housing, travel or any other expenses and does not pay interns a salary. Regrettably, neither can it assist in finding accommodation for interns. Applicants should indicate in their applications that they could provide their own funding to cover all their costs in Sweden during the internship period.
Internship positions are offered for periods of a few months. Positions are granted on the basis of the applicant’s academic background and university study programme as well as the relevance of the applicant’s research to SIPRI’s current research programme.
Applications should be made by email and addressed to email@example.com. The applicant should present her/himself and clearly indicate either a special research interest, and preferably which of SIPRI’s research programmes is most interesting, or another area of SIPRI’s work—such as outreach or activity alongside the Director—that is of interest. The application should also include the applicant’s academic background, his/her current study programme, the period of time he/she would like to spend at SIPRI, a complete CV, and information on the source of funding for the internship period.
