On 29 August, SIPRI will host a virtual event to launch the new report ‘Bias in Military AI and Compliance with International Humanitarian Law’.
States involved in policy debates on military AI are increasingly expressing concerns about bias in military AI systems. However, these concerns are rarely discussed in depth.
To support efforts to better understand and address the risks posed by bias in military AI, SIPRI is publishing a report that unpacks the nature and causes of bias in military AI, explores the challenges it poses to compliance with international humanitarian law (IHL) and discusses measures that states can take to address it. Informed by insights gathered during an expert workshop convened by SIPRI in February 2025, the report focuses on bias in AI-enabled autonomous weapon systems and decision support systems used for targeting.
The virtual launch event provides an opportunity for the public—including policymakers, members of civil society, international organizations and the private sector—to gain insights into the report’s findings and recommendations and engage directly with experts on military AI.
The launch event will take place on Zoom from 14:00–15:00 CEST. Registration can be completed through the link below.
