2019 Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development

2019 Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development
-

SIPRI is proud to host the 2019 Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development on the theme ‘From Crisis Response to Peacebuilding: Achieving Synergies’.

Often, the threat of impending violence or the cessation of violence demands immediate responses. These initial responses, however, may not reflect requirements for peacebuilding over the long term. The 2019 Stockholm Forum will explore the compromises and dilemmas that result from the dual imperatives of rapid response, on the one hand, and the long-term vision necessary for achieving a sustainable peace, on the other.

By addressing these predicaments, the Stockholm Forum will inform how humanitarian assistance, security responses, development cooperation and peacebuilding can be synergized. And, in turn, how this synergy can create more effective national action and international support in fragile contexts.

The Stockholm Forum will bring together those actors that work on stabilization and those engaged in humanitarian aid, development cooperation and peacebuilding. It aims to bridge divides by gathering forward-looking thought leaders from these different communities to foster dialogue. The Stockholm Forum will also be an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming United Nations High-level Political Forum that will review Sustainable Development Goals 13 and 16.

The 2019 Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development is designed to challenge conventional wisdom across all development sectors. Small, deep-dive workshops and round-table discussions will present specific challenges and explore solutions.

The Stockholm Forum will follow the format of the previous year: 14 May is an ‘Open Day’, and 15–16 May are ‘Focus Days’ and are by invitation only.

The Stockholm Forum is co-hosted by SIPRI and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
