On 23–28 August, SIPRI and its partners hosted the 2026 Armament and Disarmament Summer School in Stockholm and Uppsala. An annual initiative, the week-long programme seeks to empower early career professionals by expanding their knowledge and skills in the fields of disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and arms control. This year’s summer school welcomed 25 participants from 20 countries.
Over the course of the week, attendees participated in an array of sessions designed to introduce them to the key disarmament issues of today, led by SIPRI experts and partners. These covered, for example, arms transfers, artificial intelligence, disarmament diplomacy, export controls and nuclear deterrence. The programme also included a hands-on policy writing workshop and a meeting with the Department for Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Export Control at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
About the Armament and Disarmament Summer School
The Armament and Disarmament Summer School is hosted by SIPRI and the Alva Myrdal Centre for Nuclear Disarmament at Uppsala University, in cooperation with the Odesa Center for Nonproliferation. The summer school is an annual fixture within disarmament education. Structured as both a course and a networking opportunity, the summer school is aimed at young and emerging professionals in the fields of disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control. The programme intends to develop participants’ knowledge and skills, empowering emerging specialists to further expand their expertise in these critical issues.
