SIPRI welcomes three new members to its Governing Board

The Swedish Government has formally appointed Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, Nathalie Tocci and Brian A. Wong as new members of the SIPRI Governing Board

Welcoming the appointment, Stefan Löfven, Chair of the SIPRI Governing Board, says, ‘We are extremely honoured that Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, Nathalie Tocci and Brian A. Wong all have accepted our invitation. We are looking forward to their valuable contributions to the Board and to SIPRI’s work.’ 

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein is President of the International Peace Institute and Perry World House Professor of the Practice of Law and Human Rights at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Shift Project and a member of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela, Former President of South Africa and Nobel Peace Laureate.

Previously, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. He served twice as Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the UN and as Ambassador to the United States, held the presidency of the UN Security Council and was the first President of the Assembly of States Parties of the International Criminal Court. He began his career as a UN civilian peacekeeper in the former Yugoslavia and is currently a Senior Advisor to the Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Nathalie Tocci is Professor of Practice at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and former Director of the Istituto Affari Internazionali. She served as Special Advisor to European Union (EU) High Representatives Federica Mogherini and Josep Borrell, during which time she authored the European Global Strategy and supported its implementation. She is also a Senior Fellow at Bocconi University’s Institute for European Policymaking and an independent non-executive director of Acea.

Tocci has held academic positions at the Harvard Kennedy School, the European University Institute, the University of Tübingen, and the Institute for Human Sciences. Her research focuses on European foreign policy, multilateralism, conflict resolution and the EU’s global role. She is a regular columnist for The Guardian and La Stampa, a frequent BBC panellist, and a contributor to major international publications.

Brian A. Wong is an entrepreneur, investor and author specializing in digital transformation, leadership, capacity building and East–West cross-cultural affairs. He is currently a Managing Director of the Aspen China Fellowship Program  and Seacliff Partners Limited. He is the founder of RADII, a media platform covering Asia’s youth culture, digital innovation and contemporary society. He was the first American to join Alibaba, where he served as Vice President of Global Initiatives and Special Assistant to the Executive Chairman for international affairs.

Wong has been recognized as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and is a China Fellow at the Aspen Institute. He sits on the Board of Managers of Swarthmore College and serves on the board of the Committee of 100.
