The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is co-hosting ‘Military AI: International Law and Governance’, a two-day capacity-building course organized in collaboration with the Asser Institute.
The course will take place on 21–22 May 2026 at the Asser Institute in The Hague, the Netherlands. It builds on the first edition of the course held in 2025 and aims to deepen understanding of the challenges and opportunities posed by military applications of artificial intelligence (AI).
The programme focuses on how military uses of AI are developing in practice, including autonomous weapon systems and AI-based decision support tools. It also considers how concepts such as predictability, explainability and traceability affect ongoing legal and policy debates, and how existing international law frameworks apply to AI-enabled military technologies, particularly in relation to international humanitarian law, accountability and ethics.
The course is intended for an interdisciplinary group of participants, including senior policymakers, legal advisers, military and defence professionals, diplomats, technologists and representatives of international organizations and courts. Participants who complete the course will receive a professional certificate jointly issued by the Asser Institute and SIPRI.
