Mónica Chinchilla Adell

Mónica Chinchilla Adell was a Guest Researcher with the SIPRI Dual-Use and Arms Trade Control Programme. She studied a bilingual joint Degree in Global Management and Law at the University of Navarra (Spain), which enabled her to pursue two international experiences in Cardiff (Wales) and Seoul (South Korea). Mónica also started a Degree in Political Sciences through the Spanish Distance University, which she is still pursuing. Mónica is currently working towards the completion of my Doctoral Thesis, which she started in September 2017 at the University of Navarra (Spain). The main objective of her Doctoral Thesis is to identify and examine the mechanisms available in International Law to prevent terrorist groups from acquiring Weapons of Mass Destruction, specially in the realm of Security Council Resolution 1540 and its export control obligations.

At SIPRI, Mónica elaborated a brief report on Spanish prosecution cases of illegal arms trade and conducted research on United Nations sanctions implementation to North Korea and European Union sanctions enforcement. She also contributed to the understanding of the role of international humanitarian law in United Kingdom’s arms exports to Saudi Arabia and participated at the Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development, where  she simultaneously translated a session on the Humanium Metal Program.
