On 4–5 June, the SIPRI Weapons of Mass Destruction Programme hosted a workshop on ‘Strategic Shifts and the Space–Nuclear Nexus’.
The workshop analysed key developments and strategic shifts to assess how uncertainties may shape escalation pathways at the space–nuclear nexus and related implications for European security. Participants included experts and officials from nuclear and space policy communities.
During the event, participants worked to identify developments that could impact the space–nuclear nexus, including technological and policy changes in China, Russia and the United States. Participants examined how European actors are responding, deliberated on concepts of deterrence in space and engaged in a scenario exercise to identify potential triggers for escalation. The workshop concluded with an exchange on feasible steps to pursue space–nuclear risk reduction measures.
This workshop formed part of an ongoing research project on escalation risks at the space–nuclear nexus, which has included a series of reports and events convened on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly First Committee.
