Tomorrow (4 June) sees the debut of a new documentary featuring Johan Rockström, a member of the international panel guiding SIPRI’s Environment of Peace initiative and narrated by the renowned broadcaster Sir David Attenborough.

'Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet' looks at the complex environmental crises facing the planet, and what we can do to avert them. It will be available on the streaming service Netflix.

Breaking Boundaries introduces the concept of planetary boundaries—nine environmental and resource exploitation thresholds humanity must not cross in order to ensure our future on a liveable planet—and what we must do in the current decade in order to stay within the ‘safe operating space’ they enclose.

10-minute trailer for Breaking Boundaries was previewed at the recent Climate Summit organized by United States President Joe Biden.

‘Breaking Boundaries is about many of the same issues as Environment of Peace: converging crises with huge implications for health, economies, security, even survival. And it is also about humanity’s responsibility and inter-generational justice. We are driving these crises, pushing the planet towards dangerous tipping points; but we are also the ones that can turn things around,’ says Rockström. ‘The Environment of Peace will be an essential contribution, giving practical directions for policy that can help us to become better planetary stewards’, asserts Rockström.

Rockström and Owen Gaffney, both associate producers of the film, have also authored an accompanying book, published in May by DK.
