SIPRI, in partnership with the Centre for Arab Unity Studies (CAUS) and the Swedish Institute Alexandria, launched the Arabic translation of SIPRI Yearbook 2018. The Yearbook launch was part of a seminar entitled ‘Climate Risk, Armaments and Stability in the Arab Region’ and was held in Beirut, Lebanon, on 17–18 January.
The event was opened with an address by Youssef Sawani, Director of Research and Studies, CAUS, with remarks given by Dan Smith, SIPRI Director, Nils Eliasson, Director of the Swedish Institute Alexandria, and Luna Abuswaireh, Director-General of CAUS.
The seminar featured several sessions with a particular focus on regional military spending and climate change and insecurity in the region. Dr Tytti Erästo, Researcher in the SIPRI Nuclear Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-proliferation Programme, gave a presentation on a proposed nuclear weapon-free zone in the Middle East. Alexandra Kuimova, Research Assistant in the SIPRI Arms Transfers and Military Expenditure Programme, presented SIPRI’s research on Russian arms exports to the Middle East and North Africa.
Dr Johan Schaar, SIPRI Associate Senior Fellow, participated in the session on ‘Climate Change and Insecurity in the Arab Region’ and presented his current research on the geopolitical impact of climate change in the region.
