Ambassador Jan Eliasson, Chair of the SIPRI Governing Board and Sigrún Rawet, SIPRI Deputy Director, attended the OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation (FSC) in Vienna on 17 October.

Jan Eliasson gave a presentation during the Forum meeting on the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 regarding the non-proliferation of weapons of mass-destruction to and by non-state actors.

‘UNSC 1540 is as relevant today as when it was established’ said Jan Eliasson. Discussing the threat to peace and security by the proliferation of weapons of mass-destruction, Jan Eliasson said, ‘An important aspect of Resolution 1540 is that it explicitly acknowledges that these threats can only be tackled cooperatively (…) It also underlines the importance of implementing the resolution in regional organizations. Here the OSCE has a very important role to play’.

The Chairmanship of the of the Forum is currently held by Sweden and the discussions were led by Ambassador Ulrika Funered, Chairperson of the FSC and Permanent Representative of Sweden to the OSCE. Further presentations were made by Ana Hinojosa, Director of the Compliance and Facilitation Directorate at the World Customs Organization and Ali Rached, Policy Analyst at the Counter Terrorism Directorate of INTERPOL’s General Secretariat.
