The SIPRI Yearbook 1981 continues SIPRI's analyses of the world’s arms races, based on annual series of data on world military expenditures, arms production and arms trade. Efforts to control the arms races are described, including the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the 1980 Review Conference, the UN Conference on Specific Conventional Weapons, and the follow-up Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe. A detailed account is given of the status of the implementation of the major arms control agreements in the table of parties.

This Yearbook also reviews developments during the decade of the 1970s in the fields of world military expenditure, military technology and deterrence strategy, arms production and trade, and military space technology.
