On 7 May, SIPRI will host a panel discussion at the 2026 German Forum on Security Policy, held in Berlin at the Federal Academy for Security Policy.
Declining multilateralism and increasing global rivalry mean that resilient partnerships are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, the European Union (EU) and its member states are facing growing strategic competition, and the shifting foreign and security policy orientation of its most important strategic partner, the United States, is putting pressure on the EU to intensify its own efforts.
Under the title ‘Military Assistance as an Instrument of Security Policy: Europe in Strategic Comparison to its Competition and the USA, the panel will explore the growing importance of security partnerships for European security. During the event, SIPRI researchers Pieter Wezeman and Katarina Djokic will present findings from the Stiftung Mercator-funded project ‘Safeguarding Common Interests: The EU’s Military Assistance to Partner Countries’.
The event is being held in German and the panel will be livestreamed.
