SIPRI is pleased to announce that Dr Michal Krelina, SIPRI Associate Senior Researcher, will represent SIPRI on the Strategic Advisory Board to the European Commission’s Quantum Flagship initiative. Dr Krelina specializes in quantum technology, focusing on the security and defence applications of the technology.

Launched in 2018, the Quantum Flagship is a long-term research and innovation initiative that aims to put Europe at the forefront of the second quantum revolution. The Strategic Advisory Board helps the European Commission implement the Quantum Strategy and the Quantum Act and align them with the Quantum Flagship’s activities. The board is also a key part of updating the research agenda of the initiative.

In a recent SIPRI report, ‘Military and Security Dimensions of Quantum Technologies: A Primer’, Dr Krelina explores the dual-use nature of quantum technologies, arguing that strong policy frameworks, ethical norms and international cooperation will be essential considering the likely future large-scale proliferation of quantum tools. The report provides background and recommendations to support the creation of international ethical, legal and security frameworks that ensure quantum bolsters, rather than undermines, global stability.

The appointment reinforces SIPRI’s commitment to providing cutting-edge data and analysis and to shaping policy and practice.
