On 8–11 April, SIPRI and the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium delivered an intensive online course on weapons of mass destruction (WMD) non-proliferation and disarmament for students of technical disciplines.
Over four days, participants learned about evolving challenges and risks related to nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and the non-proliferation and disarmament regimes designed to control them. As part of this forward-looking course, they also explored the intersection between WMDs and other influential technological domains, such as quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, as well as missile and space applications.
The course brought together graduate and postgraduate students of technical disciplines and natural sciences, as well as young professionals. Attended by 20 participants and 15 observers, the course was instructed by renowned experts on non-proliferation, arms control, disarmament, export controls, treaty verification and related subjects from SIPRI, other European research centres, think tanks and international organizations.
About the SIPRI Weapons of Mass Destruction Programme
The WMD Programme at SIPRI seeks to contribute to the understanding of trends and developments pertaining to nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. It considers their implications for an increasingly complex security landscape and seeks to identify approaches to address the risks and challenges WMD pose. To this end, the programme examines the political, institutional, legal and technical aspects of WMD governance, focusing on international efforts at arms control and disarmament, materials security and non-proliferation, and risk reduction.
