Today, 5 December, SIPRI’s Environment of Peace initiative was awarded third place in the 2023 Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) Prize for Innovation in Global Security. Claire McAllister, Project Lead for Environment of Peace, accepted the certificate of recognition at a virtual award ceremony as part of GCSP’s Innovation Day.

The GCSP Prize was established in 2015 to recognize individuals and organizations that have an innovative approach to addressing international security challenges. It is intended to encourage and acknowledge excellence in contributing to new approaches to enhancing sustainable global security.

About SIPRI’s Environment of Peace initiative

The Environment of Peace initiative was established in May 2020 to assemble the latest research on how climate change and environmental degradation impact international peace and security. The research team consisted of over 30 people from around the world and was guided by an international expert panel and a panel of youth experts.

The research carried out by the initiative shows that the environmental crisis is increasing risks to security and peace worldwide, notably in countries that are already fragile.

The initiative’s flagship report Environment of Peace: Security in a New Era of Risk offers both guiding principles in order to navigate this new era of risk and recommendations for action.
