On 16 March, SIPRI experts gave evidence to the British Parliament Committees on Arms Export Controls as part of the committee’s inquiry into British arms exports in 2019. The oral evidence session was held virtually.
The evidence session built on the SIPRI Background Paper 'Post-shipment Control Measures: European Approaches to On-site Inspections of Exported Military Materiel' and the report 'Detecting, Investigating and Prosecuting Export Control Violations: European Perspectives on Key Challenges and Good Practices'. Among the topics covered in the session were the United Kingdom Strategic Export Controls Annual Report 2019; export controls enforcement and compliance matters; post-shipment verification, including end-use assurances and on-site inspections; and the potential impact of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union on strategic export controls.
