On 17 November, Ambassador Jan Eliasson, Chair of the SIPRI Governing Board and Dr Marina Caparini, Senior Researcher in SIPRI’s Peace and Development Programme, participated at the Swedish Forum on Human Rights.

Drawing from his experience in the United Nations, Jan Eliasson engaged in an expert mini-seminar on ‘Human rights in the UN’ together with Dr Caparini, an expert on peacebuilding and the link between security and development. Jan Eliasson reflected on the current human rights work within the UN and in what ways the work on human rights is a prerequisite for international peacebuilding.

Given the focus in peacekeeping missions both through security sector reform and police capacity building, Dr Caparini focused on how human rights have been approached in the UN system, from the Security Council to on the ground UN Police Peacekeeping. More information about the seminar can be found here.

SIPRI has released a discussion paper earlier this year ‘UN police and conflict prevention’, which connects the sustaining peace agenda and conflict prevention with the police component of the UN peace operations.

During the Forum, 15–17 November, SIPRI was present in the exhibition section located at ‘Fredstorget’.
