SIPRI expert appointed Coordinator of UN Panel of Experts

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed SIPRI Senior Researcher Hugh Griffiths as Coordinator of the UN Panel of Experts monitoring UN sanctions on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK, North Korea).

The Panel was established pursuant to UN Security Council Resolution 1874 of 2009 and is composed of nationals from the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States) as well as Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK, South Korea) and South Africa.

Griffiths was appointed to the Panel on 1 June and took up the Coordinator's position on 26 September. He is on a leave of absence from SIPRI.
