On 28–31 October Dr Sibylle Bauer, Director of SIPRI's Dual-use and Arms Trade Control Programme, participated in an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) seminar in Kuala Lumpur, giving a presentation on facilitating trade in a secure trading environment. The seminar, which was hosted by the Malaysian Government, was entitled Approaches to the Effective Implementation of Strategic Trade Management.
In her capacity as regional coordinator for the European Union (EU) Cooperation Programme in Dual-use Export Control, Bauer also led a seminar on intangible transfers of technology (ITT), hosted by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) with support from the EU Programme. SIPRI Senior Researcher Dr Peter Clevestig also gave a presentation at the seminar, on the complexity of ITT controls in the academic world.
On 14–15 November, Bauer also participated in the 12th Republic of Korea–United Nations Joint Conference on Disarmament and Non-proliferation, held on Jeju Island. The theme of the conference was The Non-Proliferation Regime in the 21st Century: Challenges and the Way Forward, and Bauer presented on 'Export control regimes and Resolution 1540: Enhancing synergy and coordination'.
