Conflict, peace and security

SIPRI looks at the most important consequences of insecurity and efforts to minimize them.

Despite a decline in the number of conflicts worldwide, they continue to have a deep and harrowing impact on the communities caught up in them. SIPRI’s work on conflict and peace studies the different kinds of armed conflict that occur, how they unfold and what their consequences are. It also examines peacekeeping missions, working to improve their efficiency and cooperation.

This research theme takes both a general and specific focus. The SIPRI Multilateral Peace Operations Database collects data on global peace operations from 2000 onwards and analyses overall trends in peace operations. SIPRI also looks at specific regions of the world, such as Afghanistan, Mali and the Arctic, where the institute examines local challenges and solutions to resolving violent conflicts.

SIPRI’s work in the area of conflict, peace and security includes hosting the Stockholm Security Conference, which was held for the first time in 2016.
