EU arms embargo on Cote d'Ivoire
The European Union arms embargo on Côte d'Ivoire
On 15 November 2004 the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1572(2004) established an arms embargo against Côte d'Ivoire which was implemented by the EU in December 2004 (Council Common Position 2004/852/CFSP, Council Regulation (EC) No 174/2005.)
In accordance with the UNSCR 1643/2005 the Council adopted Common Position 2006/30/CFSP on 23 January 2006 renewing and supplementing the restrictive measures imposed against Côte d’Ivoire for another 12-month period. The sanctions have since regularly been renewed.
Following a modification of the UN arms embargo on Côte d'Ivoire in October 2010 the EU modified its sanctions to allow the sale, supply, transfer or export of non-lethal military equipment intended solely to enable the security forces of Côte d’Ivoire to use only appropriate and proportionate force while maintaining public order, (Council Decision 2010/656/CFSP).
