On 31 March, SIPRI and the Charhar Institute co-sponsored a roundtable discussion in Beijing. The discussion focused on the relations between China and Japan, and specifically on the need for a crisis management mechanism to help improve the East Asian maritime security relations.

Dr Mathieu Duchâtel, Head of SIPRI's China and Global Security Project, took part and discussed the plan to establish a maritime communications hotline between China and Japan.

The event was covered by Chinese media and Channel News Asia (Singapore) did an interview after the discussion.
