In brief: SIPRI activities in November 2014

 

  • 3–5 Nov., London
    Dr Sibylle Bauer, Director of SIPRI's Dual-use and Arms Trade Controls Programme, attended the British Group Inter-Parliamentary Union's International Parliamentary Seminar on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), participating in a panel discussion on the role of parliament in reporting on and monitoring the ATT.

  • 3–4 Nov., Brussels
    The European Union Non-Proliferation Consortium (EUNPC), of which SIPRI is a member, held its annual seminar devoted to EU non-proliferation and disarmament policies. SIPRI Senior Researcher John Hart chaired a session on advances in biotechnology and chemistry, and SIPRI Researcher Lina Grip commented on the implementation of the EU's small arms and light weapons strategy in the light of the Arms Trade Treaty.

  • 4 Nov., Canberra
    A policy brief, 'Cyber threats and nuclear dangers', co-authored by SIPRI Researcher Vincent Boulanin and Tanya Ogilvie White, was published by the Centre for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament at the Australian National University.

  • 5–6 Nov., London
    Dr Sibylle Bauer attended an event held to mark the 10th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 on the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Bauer gave a paper on export controls and intangible technology transfers.

  • 5–7 Nov., Aalborg, Denmark
    SIPRI Researcher Ekaterina Klimenko participated in a workshop, 'The Arctic Nexus in Asia–Nordic relations'. Klimenko gave a presentation entitled 'Russia’s energy and shipping routes: possibilities and limitations of cooperation with China'.

  • 6 Nov., Grenoble
    SIPRI Researcher Vincent Boulanin presented a paper at a symposium on the future of the European defence industry co-organized by the University Pierre Mendes France and ENSTA Bretange. Boulanin's paper was entitled: 'Security, a future for the defence industry ?'.

  • 12 Nov., Luleå, Sweden  
    SIPRI Researcher Ekaterina Klimenko participated in a conference on security, climate change and scarce resources organized by Folk och Försvar (Society and Defence) and Luleå Technical University, giving a presentation entitled 'The Arctic: struggle for regional resources and influence?'.

  • 13 Nov., Seoul
    SIPRI Senior Researcher Jaïr van der Lijn participated in the Seoul Conference on United Nations Peacekeeping Operations. He presented a paper on strategic and operational challenges in multilateral peace operations.

  • 13 Nov., Stockholm
    SIPRI Researcher Ekaterina Klimenko  gave a presentation at the one-day course 'Where is Russia heading?' organized by the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI). The aim of the course was to look at recent trends in Russia’s political developments, its economic future, the situation with the media and pubic opinion. Klimenko spoke about Russia’s Arctic strategy and the consequences of the crisis in Ukraine for Russia’s Arctic development.

  • 13–14 Nov., Cologne

    Tariq Rauf, Director of SIPRI’s Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Programme, gave the keynote address at a workshop on nuclear non-proliferation compliance obligations hosted by the International Law Association and the University of Cologne.

  • 14 Nov., Geneva
    SIPRI Researcher Lina Grip presented the findings of a recent report by SIPRI and the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) on the developmental and humanitarian impact of anti-vehicle mines (PDF) at the Meeting of States Parties to the Convention of Certain Conventional Weapons.

  • 20–24 Nov., Moscow
    Tariq Rauf chaired a discussion on the 2014 Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference at the Moscow Non-Proliferation Conference hosted by the Centre for Energy and Security Studies.

     

  • 27 Nov., Berlin

    SIPRI Senior Researcher Jaïr van der Lijn participated in a breakfast meeting with members of parliament from the German Social Democratic Party. Together with Marius Müller-Hennig from the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), van der Lijn presented the latest FES Perspective publication, which focuses on the core challenges emerging from SIPRI's New Geopolitics of Peace Operations Initiative.
