SIPRI statement on the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize

SIPRI warmly welcomes the award of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), an organization closely aligned with the aims and work of SIPRI.

The Nobel Committee awarded the prize to the OPCW for 'its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons'.

'The world is a safer and more peaceful place as a result of the work of the OPCW,' said SIPRI Director Tilman Brück in a SIPRI Expert Comment issued today.

Professor Brück's comments on the Nobel Peace Prize winner for news agency AFP were also published in the Global Post, ABC Nyheter, Austrian radio programme FM4 and Die Welt.

In addition, SIPRI Deputy Director Jakob Hallgren's comments for Swedish news agency TT were picked up by Sydsvenskan and Dagens Nyheter.

On 3 June 2013, in connection with the launch of SIPRI Yearbook 2013, SIPRI held a seminar on responses to allegations of chemical weapon use, at which the Director-General of the OPCW, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, spoke. Read more about the seminar
