The SIPRI Yearbook 1980 continues SIPRI's analyses of the world's arms races, based on annual series of data on world military expenditures, arms production and arms trade. Efforts to control the arms races are described, including such topics as the as yet unratified SALT II treaty, the negotiations on a chemical disarmament treaty, the proposal for a treaty prohibiting radiological weapons, the nuclear test ban, and the prohibition of inhumane weapons. A detailed account is given of the status of the implementation of the major arms control agreements, with table of parties

This Yearbook deals with such other arms control-related topics as the role of satellites in verification of arms control agreements, negative security assurances for NPT members not in possession of nuclear weapons, confidence-building measures in Europe, and UN peace-keeping operations, as well as with the modernization of nuclear weapons in Europe.
