The map above marks the world’s top 15 countries with the highest military expenditure for 2014. Countries are ranked according to military spending calculated using market exhange rates (MER). The figures for military expenditure as a share of gross domestic product (GDP) are based on data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Economic Outlook database, Oct.2014.

Additional information

The SIPRI Military Expenditure Database is continually being revised and updated as new information becomes available. For this reason, information previously extracted from the database, or contained in previous editions of the SIPRI Yearbook, may now be incorrect.
