Senior Researcher and Director of Studies, Conflict and Peace

Context

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) seeks a Senior Researcher and Director of Studies to lead its Conflict and Peace cluster.

The post

SIPRI's research is organized under three thematic areas of study, or clusters—Armament and Disarmament, Conflict and Peace, Peace and Development. Each area of study is headed by a Director of Studies, who is a member of the Institute’s Senior Management Team.

The purpose of the post is to manage and develop the thematic Conflict and Peace cluster. This area of study covers a thriving set of programmes that includes SIPRI research at the national, regional and international levels within the broad themes of political instability, insecurity and violent conflict, security policies, conflict management and peace processes. The position is expected to develop and implement the research strategy of the cluster, ensuring that it is resourced and managing the staff working within it. The Director of Studies will balance competing demands on her/his time, mentor researchers and continue to be an active and leading researcher. The successful candidate will be a top-class researcher on themes in the cluster, with a talent for communication, the ability to manage people and budgets, an entrepreneurial instinct and a strong commitment to SIPRI’s values and mission.

Tasks and responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the Director of Studies will be:

  • Leading the work of the Conflict and Peace cluster of research programmes, including the dissemination of results;
  • Ensuring that all research proposals are well presented and properly budgeted;
  • Managing and mentoring staff and conducting performance assessments;
  • Presenting research results and conclusions in a variety of media and settings;
  • Ensuring the development and delivery of the annual Stockholm Security Conference; and
  • Being an active member of the Senior Management Team of the Institute.

Contract period

Starting from as soon as possible, the appointment will be for two years initially with possible extension up to 6 years. The post is full-time. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
