Monitoring Illicit Arms Flows: Supporting Actors in Peacekeeping Environments
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) organized an expert seminar on arms trafficking and supporting actors in peacekeeping environments at the Harmony Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 30 and 31 October 2012. This was done within the framework of an EU Council Decision under the auspices of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

This event brought leading practitioners in the fields of illicit arms monitoring, civil aviation and sanctions together with personnel from African Union and United Nations peacekeeping missions and governmental and inter-governmental representatives from the region.

The event showcased new research on illicit arms flows that affect peacekeeping missions and their mandates, as well as best practice examples of monitoring. It also provided a forum for a discussion on challenges and opportunities for governments and inter-governmental organizations seeking to better detect and monitor suspect flows of SALW and other military equipment.

Attendance was by invitation only. A limited number of sponsored places were available. For further information, please contact citmap-seminar@sipri.org .
