E-paper No. 1
In February 2010, MERCURY has issued E-paper no. 1 "Conceptualising Multilateralism: Can We All Just Get Along?". In their paper, Caroline Bouchard and John Peterson adress the role of the "poor, ugly duckling" that multilateralism is playing amongst concepts in the study of international relations. They provide a conceptual framework for understanding multilateralism and a definition that can guide further research. To read more, click  here.


E-paper No. 2
In February 2010, MERCURY has issued E-paper no. 2 "Diplomatic Strategies of Major Powers: Competinig Patterns of International Relations? The Cases of the United States of America, China and the European Union". In their paper, Nadia Klein, Wulf Reiners, Chen Zhimin, Jian Junbo and Ivo Slosarcik compare unilateral, bilateral, multilateral and pluralistic strategies of the US, China and the EU. They conclude that all major powers seek multilateralism only as one strategy amongst many. To read more, please click  here.

In February 2010, MERCURY has issued E-paper no. 3 "The Evolving 'Doctrine' of Multilateralism in the 21st Century". In their paper, Elena Lazarou, Geoffrey Edwards, Christopher Hill and Julie Smith explore in how far the concept of multilateralism has become a 'doctrine' for the EU, understood as a coherent guide to policy practice. They state that demand for effective multilateralism now extends beyond trade and security to climate change, disease control and migration. To read more, please click  here.


Policy Brief No. 1

EU-27 Watch, No. 9 is released!

The EU-27 Watch, No. 9 gives an overview on current national debates on European policy in the 27 EU member states and the four candidate countries. Topics discussed are implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, enlargement and the European Neighbourhood Policy, the financial crisis and economic policy, and climate and energy policy. Commission President Barroso meets MERCURY
