Export control project - investigation and prosecution focus
Since 2006 SIPRI has developed a research focus on investigating and prosecuting export control violations. (see SIPRI Research paper 24). Much of the report builds on events on this subject, more specifically a regional seminar for South East Europe in September 2006 and an EU seminar in September 2007.
The first event, which SIPRI organised with funding from the EU and from the US Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) Program, was held in Bled, Slovenia with participation from licensing authorities and prosecution and customs services in the partner countries in South East Europe. The following year (in September 2007), SIPRI co-hosted an internal EU meeting on prosecuting suspected export control violations together with the Swedish Prosecution Office for National Security. The meeting was funded by the European Commission (DG JLS) and most EU Member States participated.
Complementary to the EU funded activities, SIPRI implemented a project which strengthened current capabilities to investigate and prosecute violations of export control laws in South East Europe, during 2008 and 2009. Read more here.
