Capacity building

Capacity-building seminar

Since the 1990s many states, international and regional organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been engaged in a wide range of capacity-building efforts aimed at strengthening states’ dual-use and arms trade controls. SIPRI has contributed to capacity-building work by developing key tools and concepts as well as carrying out seminars and other awareness-raising activities. SIPRI experts also participate in related outreach activities conducted by the European Union and other organizations.

SIPRI contributes to broader efforts in the field of capacity-building by maintaining the Mapping ATT-Relevant Cooperation and Assistance Activities database. The database was developed in order to provide states, NGOs, regional and international organizations with information about arms transfer- and small arms and light weapons control-related cooperation and assistance activities and related guidance documents. The aim of the database is to allow these stakeholders to carry out joint work and avoid duplication of efforts when planning and implementing cooperation and assistance activities.
