Timeline: Oct. 2011 - Sept. 2012

China has a stated commitment to prevent and combat the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons (SALW) and formally recognises the destabilizing impacts that SALW transfers can have on peace and security, economic development and social stability. However, concerns have been raised concerning the potentially negative impact of transfers of Chinese SALW and ammunition.

Therefore, this project seeks to (a) gain a more comprehensive understanding of Chinese approaches to preventing and combating illicit and destabilizing small arms and light weapons (SALW) transfers and (b) engage Chinese officials and SALW manufacturers and exporters on improving mechanisms to control SALW transfers.
