New entrant at 20th place, 960 per cent increase in arms sales
Navistar entered the SIPRI Top 100 at 20th place in arms sales in 2008. The company made arms sales worth $3.9 billion to the US DOD, up from $368 million in 2007—a 960 per cent increase in just one year.
- Navistar’s arms sales increased to 26 per cent of its total sales, up from 3 per cent in 2007.
- These increases are primarily due to significantly higher sales of mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles, in particular M-ATV armoured vehicles deployed in the war in Afghanistan.
- Navistar was one of many companies providing equipment and services to the armed forces involved in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that increased their arms sales in 2008, but none rivalled Navistar’s rate of growth.
