Carina Solmirano joined SIPRI in 2009 as a researcher with the Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme. Her previous research work had focused on issues including arms control and disarmament, non-proliferation, civil–military relations and security-sector reform in post-conflict situations. She has been an active participant in security and defense debates in her home country, Argentina, and a promoter of the inclusion of women in the field of security studies. Her knowledge and expertise in Latin American issues was key to the founding of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Association at the University of Denver, Josef Korbel School of International Studies, where Ms Solmirano pursued her doctoral studies.
