SIPRI hosts briefing by Armenian Foreign Minister

On 25 November 2014 SIPRI hosted a briefing by the Armenian Foreign Minister, Edward Nalbandian, on security challenges in the South Caucasus.

Minister Nalbandian holds a PhD in Political Science from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR National Academy of Sciences. Prior to his appointment as Armenian Foreign Minister in 2008, he was the Armenian Ambassador to France, Israel, the Holy See and Andorra, as well as to Egypt, Morocco, and Oman.

2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the May 1994 ceasefire, which ended the armed conflict between Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh. The final peace agreement, however, has yet to be established. Furthermore, recent escalation of tension on the Line of Contact between Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh and on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan has shown that the situation is volatile.

During the briefing Minister Nalbandian discussed recent developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace talks as well as the security challenges facing Armenia. Read a press release about the briefing on the website of the Armenian Foreign Ministry.

The briefing was attended by Swedish Government representatives, members of the Stockholm diplomatic community, researchers and academics, and members of the interested public.
