On 24 November 2014 SIPRI and Stockholm University held a seminar entitled 'Media in a political context: watchdog or propaganda instrument?' at the Filmhuset (Film House) in Stockholm.
Participants in the seminar discussed media coverage during conflict, its perceived role and responsibilities, and the challenges that the global media landscape, the public and governments pose to independent reporting.
The first session, 'The media and broadcast responsibility in a sensitive security environment', was chaired by SIPRI Director Dr Ian Anthony and featured Alexa Robertson (Department of Media Studies, Stockholm University) and Dr Oleksiy Melnyk (Ukrainian Center for Economic and Political Studies, Kiev).
The second session, 'Professional standards in news and current affairs journalism', was chaired by Anders Mellbourn from the Department of Media Studies, Stockholm University, and featured Mary Dejevsky (journalist with the Independent) and Aidan White (Ethical Journalism Network).
