  • 3–6 Oct., Moscow
    SIPRI Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-proliferation Programme Director Tariq Rauf participated in a round table discussion at the International School on Global Security for young specialists from the Commonwealth of Independent States. He also attended a meeting of the Advisory Board of the Russian Centre for Policy Studies (PIR Centre) in Moscow on Russia, the nuclear non-proliferation agenda and the 2015 NPT Review Conference.

  • 6 Oct., Geneva
    SIPRI Senior Researcher Pieter Wezeman gave a lecture at a course for officials from 16 countries on building capacities for effective implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty. The course was organized by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) and the Geneva Forum.

  • 7 Oct., Paris
    SIPRI Researcher Vincent Boulanin defended his PhD dissertation, entitled 'From Defence to Security: the diversification of European armament firms in the realm of security' (in French), at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. Boulanin was awarded a PhD degree summa cum laude in political science.

  • 13 Oct., Rome
    SIPRI Senior Researcher Dr Neil Melvin, Head of the Conflict and Peacebuilding in the Caucasus Project, participated in a round table discussion on Europe–Russia relations organized by the Italian Institute for International Political Studies and the Russian International Affairs Council. Dr Melvin's presentation was entitled 'The Arctic as a Zone for Cooperation: Challenges for Europe and Russia'.

  • 15 Oct., Helsinki
    SIPRI Senior Researcher Jaïr van der Lijn presented the preliminary findings from the New Geopolitics of Peace Operations Initiative at an event at the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  • 15 Oct., Brussels
    Dr Neil Melvin presented at a conference organized by the Europe Central Asia Monitoring (EUCAM) programme, in cooperation with the Permanent Representation of Finland to the European Union in Brussels, entitled 'Geopolitical changes in the neighborhood: what impact on Central Asia?' Dr Melvin gave a presentation on Central Asian security challenges.

  • 16 Oct., Uppsala
    Dr Neil Melvin gave a presentation entitled' The Caucasus as a regional war complex' at Uppsala University. In his presentation, Dr Melvin examined violence and conflict in the Caucasus through attention to the interlinkages across the region, including the actions of violent non-state actors and states. 

  • 20–24 Oct., Hanoi, Viet Nam
    At the invitation of the European Union (EU) delegation in Viet Nam, SIPRI Senior Researcher Mathieu Duchâtel gave lectures on the EU policy on maritime issues in East Asia at Ho Chi Minh Law University, the Vung Tau Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and Vietnam National University.

    SIPRI Researcher Oliver Bräuner gave a presentation on China–European Union (EU) security cooperation at a roundtable entitled Europe–China Relations: From Promises to Action, organized by the Friends of Europe and the China Public Diplomacy Association.

  • 21 Oct., The Hague
    SIPRI Senior Researcher Siemon Wezeman gave a lecture on the arms trade at an event organzied by the Society for International Development and hosted by the Institute for Social Studies.

  • 23 Oct., Stockholm
    SIPRI and Economists for Peace and Security co-published a new post in the Economists on Conflict blog, 'The effect of firearm laws on firearm manufacturing location', by Jurgen Brauer, Daniel Montolia and Elisa Trujillo.
