SIPRI appoints Tariq Rauf as new Arms Control and Non-proliferation Programme Director

SIPRI is pleased to announce the appointment of Tariq Rauf as the new Director of its long-standing Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Programme. Rauf will assume his position at SIPRI on 14 February.

Tariq Rauf is an internationally respected authority on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation who brings a wealth of policy and research expertise to SIPRI. From 2002 to 2012 he held senior positions at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and has also worked in a wide range of academic and policy settings.

‘This is a stimulating challenge and I am excited and honoured to be given this opportunity to apply the insights accumulated during my many years at the IAEA and from my engagement with nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament issues,’ says Rauf.

‘I am very much looking forward to continuing policy-related work on these matters, including the Non-Proliferation Treaty, establishing a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, and other related disarmament and international security issues.’

SIPRI Director Professor Tilman Brück comments: ‘I am delighted that Tariq will lead our internationally recognized work on arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation. His experience is an excellent fit for SIPRI, and he will further strengthen our track record as one of the top institutes monitoring and analysing arms control.’

Outgoing Programme Director Dr Ian Anthony will lead the new SIPRI European Security Programme, launched at the Munich Security Conference earlier this month. ‘I am proud to hand over the work to Tariq. With his depth of knowledge and experience I have no doubt that SIPRI will continue to contribute to deeper understanding of the problems in the field of arms control, and play a constructive role in developing solutions,’ Anthony states.
