1 March: Launch of SIPRI Report on China and the Arctic, Oslo


Common security concerns of China and Norway

SIPRI, with the support of the Norwegian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, will launch a new report entitled “China and the High North prepare for an ice-free Arctic” at a launch event, hosted by the the Norwegian Polytechnical Association. The report is written by Beijing-based SIPRI Senior Researcher Linda Jakobson, Acting Director of the SIPRI Programme on China and Global Security, and is the first of its kind, drawing heavily on Chinese sources and interviews with Chinese scholars and officials. Gry Larsen is State Secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in charge of foreign and security policy issues ranging from human rights to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Her portfolio also covers NATO, Afghanistan/Pakistan as well as Africa.
 
Dr Bates Gill  is Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). He is a renowned international expert on Chinese security policy and the author of Rising STar: China's New Security Diplomacy (Brookings Press, 2007). Together with Chin-hao Huang, Dr Gill recently published a SIPRI report on China's growing role in peacekeeping.
 
Linda Jakobson is based in Beijing and acting director for SIPRI's program on China and Global Security. She has written extensively on China's Taiwan policy and, more recently, on China's climate policy.
 
In their presentations they will argue that there is room for intensifying Norway's cooperation with China in the field of security, both narrowly and widely defined.
