MEDI - Mapping of the European Defence Industry
SIPRI has been awarded a contratct in the MEDI project, which is a European Commission Initiative within DG Enterprise and Joint Research Center (JRC). The prime objective is to develop a better understanding of the European defence-related industries in terms of their economic strength, their technical and technological capabilities and their overall competitiveness.SIPRI plays a partner role in the projcet as part of a data collection network, consiting of CEIS, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, IAI, AFARMADE, Rote Consulting and Qinetiq. Each institute and organisation contributes to the project with data and analyses in different ways.
SIPRIs projects on Military Expenditure and Arms Production and the Arms Transfers Project provide assistance by collecting two kinds of data;
- economic data - which refers to the identifying of defence-related companies with a turnover above €25 million
- budgetary data and imports - which refers to (i) the providing of data on total and disaggregated defence expenditure, defence expenditure as a share of GDP and equipment expenditure, and (ii) the examining how the governments covered define, collect and report data on arms imports.
The project will cover the 19 non-LOI (Letter of Intent) EU Member States: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia and Slovenia.
Processes within MEDI
- Collection of economic, technical and technological and defence budgets data.
- Generating a database to harmonising and consolidate the data.
