Project Title: EU Co-operation programme on non-proliferation and disarmament in the Russian Federation; chemical weapons destruction in Gorny

Budget Line: B8-011 (1999) Amount: €5,965,000

Implementing Body: Auswärtiges Amt, Bundesrepublik Deutschland - German Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Description of Action:

Construction of a chemical weapons destruction plant in Saratov district, Russia. The project has 3 components:

  • final fitting and technical installation of equipment and related engineering
  • purchase, delivery and installation of filter boxes for air purification
  • purchase and delivery of equipment for transportation of chemical materials from interim storage to the destruction line

The management of the project is entrusted to the German project manager (Auswärtiges Amt) in co-operation with the Federal Office for Arms Technology and Procurement (Bundesamt fur Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung). This project is complementary to a Russia-Germany project.

Objectives

Destruction of 2.9 % of total arms stocks earmarked by Russia for destruction under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Means

EU contribution is 5.97 million Û for the 3 components. The major part of the facility is financed by Russia and Germany, respectively.

Achievements

The construction of the facility was finalised and the destruction programme began in December 2002.
