United Nations arms embargoes - Sierra Leone

United Nations arms embargoes

Sierra Leone

In October 1997 Security Council resolution 1132 established an arms embargo on Sierra Leone, at that time under military rule.

In June 1998 Security Council resolution 1171 lifted this territorial embargo but established a new arms embargo that did not apply to the government of Sierra Leone (no longer under military rule) but applied instead to the forces controlled by military commanders that had played a leading role in government and to the Revolutionary United Front (RUF).
