The Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction
The Summit held at Kananaskis, Canada in June 2002 was the first after the terrorist attacks on the United States in September 2001. The discussion of security related issues were one central feature at the meeting.
At Kananaskis the leaders launched the G8 Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction, under which the G8 pledged to undertake cooperative projects on the basis of agreed guidelines. The leaders agreed six Nonproliferation Principles aimed at preventing terrorists or those who harbour them from acquiring or developing nuclear, chemical, radiological and biological weapons as well as missile delivery systems for them.
At their summit in Evian, France on 9 June 2004 the G8 leaders agreed an Action Plan on Non-proliferation in which they reaffirmed their conviction that the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction was the pre-eminent threat to international peace and security.
The G8 leaders have evaluated the Global Partnership Against Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction at subsequent summits. A Global Partnership annual report describing activities and accomplishments.
