EU Arms Embargo on Cote d'Ivoire
The European Union arms embargo on Côte d'Ivoire
On 15 November 2004 the United Nations Security Council established an arms embargo against Côte d'Ivoire in its Resolution 1572(2004).
In order to implement this UN arms embargo in a uniform manner, the EU adopted Council Common Position 2004/852/CFSP concerning restrictive measures against Côte d'Ivoire on 13 December 2004.
A number of restrictive measures to be applied fall under the scope of European Community legal competence. To ensure uniform implementation of these restrictive measures the Council adopted Council Regulation (EC) No 174/2005 of 31 January 2005 imposing restrictions on the supply of assistance related to military activities to Côte d’Ivoire.
In accordance with the UNSCR 1643/2005 the Council adopted Common Position 2006/30/CFSP on 23 January 2006 renewing and supplementing the restrictive measures imposed against Côte d’Ivoire for another 12-month period.
